Description: Janis Joplin was born in Port Arthur, Texas, in 1943. She landed in San Francisco in 1966, where she joined up with a local musical group called Big Brother and the Holding Company. In 1968, the group released its album “Cheap Thrills.” The success of the album prompted Janis to break off and launch her solo career. Her meteoric rise to worldwide fame would be short-lived, however. Janis Joplin died in 1970 at age 27 from an accidental heroin overdose. Source: History.com
