“Jingle Bells” was originally titled “The One-Horse Open Sleigh” and first published in 1857 under that title. “Jingle Bells” became its retitled name two years later. Written by James Lord Pierpont, the song was inspired by an annual one-horse open-sleigh race that took place on Salem and Pleasant Streets in Medford, Massachusetts. Pierpont composed the song in Simpson’s Tavern, a local boarding house that had one of the few pianos in town. Source: AmericanMusicPreservation.com
