Which food got its own “International Year” in 2008?
The International Year of the Potato helped to increase awareness of the fundamental importance of the potato as a staple food for Earth’s human population. The aim of the global campaign included the promotion of sustainable systems for potato producers and consumers. The world’s population should grow over the next two decades, putting pressure on already strained food production resources. The potato is expected to play an important role in meeting these food production challenges. Source: FAO.org
The potato is a starchy, tuberous crop from the perennial nightshade Solanum tuberosum. The word “potato” may refer either to the plant itself or to the edible tuber.
